Biography

MOURAD FOUAD: SURREALIST PAINTER

Mourad Fouad is an Egyptian-Canadian artist born in 1975, whose work represents a continuous and impactful exploration of surrealism. His early training in architecture and urbanism in Cairo gives his paintings structural mastery and a sense of perspective that transcends the apparent chaos of dreamlike imagery.

He began his artistic journey very early. By the age of 13, he had started drawing and painting, holding his first exhibition at just 14 years old. During his university studies in architecture and urbanism, he worked with renowned Egyptian galleries to fund his education, specializing in classical realism. After completing his degrees and exploring modern art movements, he discovered surrealism in 1999.

This encounter was a true revelation: surrealism appeared to him as a revolutionary world where he could manipulate reality at will. A universe with no limits except those he imposes himself, where imagination is the only rule. In 2000, he held his first solo surrealist exhibition in a Cairo studio. Since then, this movement has become the lens through which he explores profound existential questions and awakens critical awareness of contemporary issues.

Since moving to Quebec in 2016, Mourad Fouad briefly explored realism and impressionism in 2017 and 2018 before returning with renewed depth and intensity to surrealism. He creates a universe where reality bends to the dream, producing works that capture attention and evoke complex, sometimes unsettling, emotions in the viewer.

Today, traditional surrealism is increasingly rare. In this context, each painting by Mourad Fouad is a true project, requiring time, energy, and meticulous attention to detail. His practice demands deep technical mastery, advanced symbolic thinking, and a strong personal vision, which explains why his production is intentionally limited. In a world where contemporary art often favors speed, interactivity, or digital technologies, his work stands out even more for its depth, uniqueness, and the artist’s full commitment.

In his works, he applies his method using illusions, unreal atmospheres, juxtapositions of incongruous elements, distortions of reality, and the subversion of visual conventions, inviting the audience to a profound reflection on complex and delicate themes.

Driven by a deep conviction that art is a powerful tool to raise awareness and encourage action for a better world, his paintings act as visual manifestos addressing environmental protection, the fight against social injustice, and the promotion of peace and intercultural understanding.

He creates his works with vivid colors and striking contrasts. This vibrant use of color strengthens the visual and emotional impact of each piece, allowing every composition to open a window on the urgent issues of the world. Through his surrealist universe, he invites the viewer to see differently, feel, and question the world, rekindling the shared humanity that unites us all.
